Spatial planning strongly influences future flood risk in Wallonia (Belgium)

Our new research suggests that, without regulation, flood risk due to river flooding would increase by 5 to 10% per decade in Wallonia, as a result of urbanization. However, banning new developments in flood-prone areas proves highly benefitial as it enables a reduction of the expected increasesby at least a factor three! This is the first systematic quantification of these effects based on the coupling of an advanced landuse change model and flow simulations. More details are published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Environmental Management (link).
